Sanford, thankful to be wearing a protective shrapnel jacket on his upper half, flipped over into a trench at the bottom of Hill 104 and waited. He figured the grenade would explode before it reached him, but it didn’t. It exploded on top of him.On top of that, virtually his entire unit was killed. Truly horrible. For him to still be as driven as he is is a testament to the Marine Corps.
