Hunting buffalo with Cold Steel

I admit to finding Lynn Thompson's self defense handgunnery to be not only laughable, outright dangerous, and foolish, (go to 7:30 mark to see his technique of firing as soon as the muzzle leaves the holster) but there's no denying that the man pushes the limits of his world.

Here a buffalo goes all ninja on Lynn's well aimed spear throw and tries to take him out. He's pretty handy with a double action .454 Ruger, and fortunately doesn't take his own advice by firinghalf of his rounds into the dirt while getting the front sight on target:

My brother emailed this video to me of a convenience store owner in Turkey who shoots a knife wielding attacker. This video is somewhat graphic, as the attacker slashes a man's throat and repeatedly slashes at two other men. ***Warning: NSFW -- Graphic***



The store owner takes his sweet time getting his pistol into play, but when he does he makes a fatal (I think) single shot on a moving target after being stabbed and hacked. Pretty impressive. I think that keeping your sidearm in condition one on your person at all times is the way to go.

Good grief. There's so much fail in this short tragic story that I'm just shaking my head.

As Bittinger approached the front porch of the home, the suspect fired an arrow into his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shootee had a "weapon;" the type is not made clear in the article. I'm under the assumption that if the shootee had a weapon and made threats, and/or became a deadly threat, then perhaps deadly force via bow and arrow was appropriate. Just because the shooter didn't use Paw Paw's shotgun hanging over the mantle doesn't mean that deadly force wasn't justified. The Dukes were quite fond of primitive tackle, and as we know they were just some good ol' boys, never meanin' no harm.

This part of the story was interesting:

The coroner says Bittinger died when the arrow punctured his lung and blood filled his heart.

Blood filled his heart?!?! You can die from that? Oh, shit, I have blood in my heart right now! I'mma fixin to call me the rescue squad, right fast! Maaaama! Maaama heeeeelp!! Bloods done filled my heart!!!!

My take on this is that the coroner meant blood filled his lung, or maybe the coroner imbibed a little too much moonshine, or even his sweat stained Realtree hat is on just a little too tight. We'll never know for sure. The hits just keep on coming, though:

Or killing babies. You know, because anything that provides more force should be brought into the light for some much needed obfuscation, and then hopefully some legislating. Because this wasn't a killing with a "bow," but a "compound bow," meaning that we should ponder the shit out of what this actually means. It means the deadliness of the instrument is compounded, and commands less effort to wield, so logically we should point this out to the masses considering that a good 99.99% of professional journalists don't have a clue as to what to make of this. Being that the weapon is obviously compounded, it should only be allowed in the hands of law enforcement and professional hunters who have met the compounded training needed to handle all that compounded power that comes from a system of pulleys. Idiot.

A history of sword violence

"We've arrested him on two different occasions. Once in June where he had another sword, which is in evidence. This is not the same sword. He cut his grandmother on the foot with it that time," Miller said, according to CBS Atlanta.

Sounds like the county failed to properly intervene here and put this teenager where he belongs by using the full extent of the law. Is it that hard to keep little scumbags behind bars/glass?

I post this story like I do all the other sword attack stories to point out that despite our advanced society we are not that far separated from history. A sharpened piece of steel is easy to come by, and can inflict fatal wounds without the need to reload.

Dis-Sworderly conduct

In Maryland, an edgy fellow with a grudge and a sword threatens people with the steel, including children!!!Gasp!! Fortunately he sheathed the beast before the cops showed up and forced him onto the path to righteousness.

I do wonder about the charge of carrying a weapon with an intent to injure; I would bet that if he had threatened the responding police officers, they would have shot him very dead, with the investigation and AAR stating that the maniac with the sword represented a deadly threat that had to be stopped with a hail of gunfire. And right they would have been.

Where was the security?

Prosecutors say Alkebular attacked the 14-year-old boy twice on April 25 inside and outside the zoo. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the victim recognized the group Alkebular was with and tried to avoid it. Several people attacked the victim inside the zoo led by Akebular, who stabbed him twice in the arm before his group fled.

He then went on to catch up with the victim later and stab him in the guts repeatedly.

Uuuummmmm, the Smithsonian Zoo is a Gun Free Zone that is protected by a full time staff of security personnel. A quick check confirms the stipulation right there on their webpage that they "ensure your safety," and that carrying knives there is against the rules. I'm thinking the victim's parents have grounds for a claim against the Smithsonian, as getting stabbed multiple times by a group of youths runs counter to the idea of ensured safety. Notice the specific mention of knives and weapons:

Do not bring any sharp items into the museums such as knives (including pocket or "Swiss Army"-style knives), screwdrivers, scissors, nail files, corkscrews, etc. Firearms, pepper spray, and Mace are also prohibited.

Officer friendly at the top of the page, who appears to be gleefully handing out a parking ticket, looks to have a firearm on his duty belt. Lots of good it did the victim. If kids can wander into an allegedly secure area and stab people with impunity, than it's not really secure, and all you're doing with a policy like that is disarming everyone else. This sort of attack can happen to anyone at that zoo, and is the reason why I have/will never take my family there. I have actual knowledge that the Virginia Beach Zoo and the Virginia Beach Aquarium does not disarm its visitors, so I'll stick with going there.

Sheriff Maj. David Decatur says Douglas Edward Turner went banging on the "victim's" door just before midnight demanding that he come outside. When the man opened his door, Turner came at him with a chainsaw. Turner cut up a handrail but did not injure the victim, who ran back inside and locked the door.

Stafford county heathens just doing what they do best. The moral of this story is never bring a chainsaw to a baseball bat fight. Tell me you knew I was going to say that. Also, if someone is braying on your door at midnight, and you hear an idling two-stroke engine on the other side, it's a safe bet that you can go ahead and back away from the door and call the cops. Hasn't the homeowner ever seen a slasher movie before?

And another thing, I don't know about you, but I qualify a chainsaw as being a deadly weapon, and not just a tool for wounding maliciously; you can bet that this crazy sumbich would have been shot the moment he breached the walls of my house with that thing. If there was one time an AR15 with all the accoutrements could be readily prepared and wielded against a bona fide madman in the process of sawing his way into your domicile at night, it was in this attack, and the homeowner grabs a stick of wood instead. At least he used it well.

Unconventional weapon violence

With so much focus on firearm usage during a crime by anti-gun folks, I take the time point out that the true weapon is the one who wields it. The adage of "guns don't kill people; people kill people" really is true. Virtually anything can be used to deadly intent by a madman:

AN assailant has sprayed a Roman Catholic priest with flammable liquid and set him alight during mass in a church in Lithuania, police in the Baltic state say.

Gasoline and lighters are readily available, and can be used to kill or harm. So can swords, machetes, and knives, which are not only readily available, but can be made by hand in a short amount of time. Mankind has been using fire and edged weapons to project force since the beginning of time, and they are still effective today.

The Tueller Drill for real

The Tueller Drill - or 21 foot rule - shows that a threat with a knife can get in a fatal blow on a person with a holstered handgun if that person is within 21 feet of the threat.

Some people discount the severity of a threat armed with a knife, as did these Nicaraguan police officers. ***Warning - graphic content. Two police officers are killed and several wounded in this video.***

Watching that video showed me how fast one guy with a knife can end lives and maim others. There was quite a bit of shooting from the officers with rifles, and it's unknown how many of their shots connected. The assailant finally did go down, but was still drawing breath when they put the cuffs on him.

I noticed that none of the cops had their weapons trained on the guy when he made his move. There was some complacency there that you can see in this longer version of the video that starts minutes before ol' boy goes all stabby. One well placed shot could have stopped the attack before it began, but once it commenced, the cops were on the defense and the assailant was moving fast. I also noticed that every cop he attacked was trying to retreat and fell down in the process, which is why gun schools often teach their students on proper footwork when moving. I would imagine that this wouldn't have played out like it did if it happened in the US. After he failed to drop the knife in a moment or two, he would have been Tazed, maced, and then savagely beaten before being handcuffed, and probably one officer would have been positioned for a lethal shot from a firearm.

Nit picking with knitting needles

We must do everything within our power to stop the scourge of knitting needle violence. Registration and regulation on length and size is only the start.

I would bet that a knitting needle in your carry on luggage would pass the scrutiny of TSA's finest grope-warriors. Surefire will come out with a tactical model by summer's end.

Don't axe the cops

When officers arrived at the day care, the father did not back down. He lunged at officers with the ax, according to police. Three officers shot at him.

This had to have been suicide by cop. It looks like there was good cause for the mother and the daycare to deny this guy from being able to pick up his kids. I'm guessing that he had reached the end of his rope and fell off, and had nothing to lose at that point.

Axes are definitely deadly weapons; however, I wish manufacturers of modern day axes would stop dulling the edge before sending them to Home Despot. I know the lawyers put them up to it -- if you go to the genesis of every problem in America you will find a lawyer -- but swinging a heavy butter knife is not the best way to get work done. Trust me.

Musketeers and carrying a big stick

Two bizarre robberies of note caught on video.

The first one has a lunatic swinging a tree trunk at a store owner in a successful robbery attempt. The store owner tried to get the bandit hammered unsuccessfully. What would you do if you were armed with a firearm and this guy came in and tried to rob you? The cops consider it armed robbery, but I might have tried to take that stick away from the guy if it happened to me.

The second one happened in Canada where some wonderfully misunderstood youths were trying to get charity money from a motel using a musket. They didn't get the funds. In this particular incident, I would see good cause to justify deadly force, as a musket is still up to the task of killing someone as any other firearm. What would you do?

Feeeelings. . . . . .nothing more than feeeeelings

Some pathetic little thug murdered a Baltimore detective with a rock, leaving his wife a widow and his kids fatherless, all over a parking space. This reinforces my belief to never argue such things if at all possible, which is not clear from the information in this story.

What we do have is a man who is presumably armed and trained to use a firearm getting killed by a guy wielding mankind's oldest weapons system, thereby demonstrating that safety from predators is not always certain even if one is prepared and has all the proper tools on hand.

Fortunately the dirtbag in this case was easily apprehended, as he was relaxing in a club sipping on a cold one. Let's hope the jury gets to hear that part; although I don't have any confidence in the justice system in Maryland regardless. I'm waiting with bated breath to hear about this piece of work's extensive criminal history; you don't just get to the point one day where casually brain someone with a stone. These things develop over time.

The reason for the title to this post though has nothing to do with murderous scumbags and everything to do with the clueless people who domicile in and around noted dangerous cities talking about how they want to feel safe. The woman in question didn't happen to mention how she's going to go about making herself safe using her mind and her own two hands. My guess is that when pressed, she will mention something about voting for some Baltimore lawyer-critter to apply for the daunting task of running that violent city, all in the hopes of being tuff on crime or something.

I'm sure they'll get right on that.

Human beings are aiming for a life of extinction considering that the majority of the folks out there would flat out be beaten to death or starve in the wilderness if someone didn't completely protect them. "Feeling" safe has absolutely nothing to do with actually being safe; the latter having everything to do with life favoring the prepared, or so I've been told once. Even that is no guarantee, but it sure does help. I just don't get though how people can be so naive, as if they can magically will away the bad people. Crazy.

As my wife often says to me: "Don't talk about it; be about it!"

Cop kills swordsman

Crazy sword wielding articles aren't that hard to come by these days. This one is like all the others, kinda blah, but the point remains (feel my pun!) that sharpening a piece of metal is easy to do, and swords are every bit as effective as a weapon as a firearm.

Friday morning roundup

A 9mm handgun "accidentally fired," all on its own of course according to the news, sending a bullet through an adjacent apartment. Fortunately, the bullet didn't hit anyone, and the moron who negligently fired it called 911 and owned his stupidity. He was arrested. Of note is that the bullet went through three walls, two of them exterior, before stopping on the fourth.

Mmmyaah. . .life sentence, schmife sentence. . . .who cares that he shot five people to death; he's cooperating!

Nothing in this article interests me, with the exception that I firmly believe that it's dishonorable and disrespectful to wear chevrons that you didn't earn. It makes a pretty stupid fashion statement too.

Look for pens to soon be banned in courthouses, schools, and public buildings because they can obviously be used as weapons.

A Florida man obviously compensating for his penis retrieves his pistol from his car and stops a bank robbery without managing to fire a shot in all his bloodthirsty anger. It's ok though because he was an OFF DUTY SECURITY GUARD. No mention of whether he is an armed security guard, though he bothered with the permit stuff to exercise his rights, so it's doubtful.

Beware! Ninja roam the woods, and are armed with machetes. Someone should make a law banning kids from putting on masks and slashing people with primative weapons.

"Guns are not allowed on campus, absolutely," - Spoken right after a woman fires a handgun in a bathroom stall on a campus in Denver. Maybe there should be a sign or something.

Kure Beach, North Carolina mayor hates, Hates thongs so bad he bans them. Californians and New Yorkers are happy he did. OK then. I have to ask then: how much cheek is too much?

China schools have become so dangerous despite the almost complete ban on firearms in the country that the government has to put armed cops in schools to stop the killing. That "police restraint stick" is so cool that I'm going to buy one and order a holster for it. Can't be too safe these days.

Getting hammered

Hammers can be very lethal as an Ohio man found out when he was shot dead by police for beating a woman with one.

When swords are outlawed. . . .

Only violent, suicidal teens will have swords.

Maybe there should be a length limit on swords to prevent teens from slicing their wrist with em'.

Say 24" for people under the age of 25; and we should limit them to one sword a month. It's just common sense.

Your bizarre story of the day

This one has it all: guns, drugs, sexual assault, ski masks, crossbow violence, car crashes, intoxication. . . .it all ads up to one hell of a story. It seems that possession of narcotics in the home attracts this sort of thing. Glad to hear everyone survived.

Now, when you think of the type of people that you would want to prevent from obtaining a firearm, these guys are at the top of the stack. How they made it into their twenties without choking to death on a hot dog is anyone's guess, but the fact remains that people like this are bound to screw up at some point, and you're not going to stop them with a background check at a gun show. It's not going to happen.

The place to stop them is, sadly, after the fact, which in this case is here and now. Good to know that one of them is going to get a permanent residence in a Virginia state prison, but the other two will walk free eventually. The drunken rapist will walk free right after he's fifty, and the other guy gets twenty eight years of his sentence suspended. What gives?

I blame violent video games
